Microtopping — a seamless surface without demolition
Microtopping (microcement) is a thin, polymer-modified mineral coating applied by hand in layers over the existing substrate. The result is a seamless, monolithic surface with a modern concrete look — on floors, walls, in the bathroom or on stairs, without demolition.
What microtopping is
A multi-layer system (primer, reinforcing mesh on critical joints, base and fine coats, sanding), finished with a 2-component polyurethane sealer. Total thickness is only 2–3 mm, so heights and doors usually stay unchanged. Applied over tiles, screed, concrete, plasterboard and other sound substrates — without demolishing the existing one.
Where we use it
- 01Floors in living and commercial spaces
- 02Walls and bathrooms — showers and wet rooms (waterproof once sealed)
- 03Stairs and landings — without joints
- 04Kitchen worktops, basins, furniture and shelves
- 05Floor + wall in the same material for a calm, cohesive look
Advantages
No demolition
Applied over existing tiles or screed — less dust, noise and waste, shorter execution.
Seamless
No joints where dirt collects — hygienic and easy to clean.
Thin and light
Only 2–3 mm and low weight — keeps heights, ideal for renovations.
Underfloor heating
The thin layer conducts heat well — compatible with underfloor heating.
Design
A wide range of tones and finishes (matte, satin, gloss); the same material for floor and wall.
Waterproof
With a polyurethane sealer it resists water — suitable for showers and bathrooms.
Look and finish
The surface is applied by hand, so it has a natural, slightly cloudy tonal flow — that is a characteristic of microcement and part of its appeal, not a defect. You choose the finish between matte, satin or gloss; we match the colour to your space on a sample.
How it works
- 01Site visit and substrate check (must be sound and free of active cracks)
- 02Substrate preparation and primer, reinforcing mesh on joints
- 03Base coats — form and coverage
- 04Fine coats and sanding — final texture
- 052–3 coats of 2-component polyurethane sealer (matte/satin/gloss)
- 06Drying between coats — usually 3–5 working days in total
Honestly — when microtopping is not the right choice
The substrate must be sound and stable: if it moves or cracks, the crack can telegraph into the coating. In heavily used wet/commercial areas the top sealer needs occasional renewal. The application is handcrafted — tone and texture are not perfectly uniform; if you want a completely uniform look, we tell you so honestly up front.
Frequent questions
Can it be applied over tiles?
Yes, on a sound, prepared substrate it is applied over existing tiles or screed, without demolition.
Is it suitable for a bathroom and shower?
Yes. With the right sealer and correctly executed joints it is waterproof and suitable for wet rooms.
How long does it take?
Usually 3–5 working days per room, including drying between coats.
How is it maintained?
Clean with a neutral cleaner; in heavily used areas the top sealer is renewed occasionally.
